The Badger-Rapide Croche (Badger) Development is located in the City of Kaukauna (Kaukauna), Wisconsin at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Kaukauna dam on the Fox River. The project is approximately 1,800 feet downstream of the Kaukauna dam and utilizes the head created by the 22-foot-high dam and a power canal. Flows, therefore, used for generation bypass the natural river channel.
The licensee of the project decided that the project is not economically feasible for relicensing. Through a settlement of which HRC/MHRC was a part, the licensee decided to decommission the project, potentially opening the door for dam removal. For relicensing, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) wanted licensee to install emergency spillways at Brown Bridge dam.
These six projects on the Au Sable River are part of the Settlement Agreement filed on December 7, 1992 that includes a total of 11 projects (3 on the Muskegon, 6 on the Au Sable and 2 on the Manistee River.
Stockport will develop a WQ monitoring plan which will include measures to enhance dissolved oxygen (DO) when it falls below 5 mg/L. When the DO level falls below 5 mg/L, the project is required to be shut down.
This project is part of the Wilderness Shores Settlement Agreement (WSSA) signed on February 10, 1997. The WSSA contains ten hydroelectric (hydro) projects and one non-hydro dam. Coalition members Michigan Hydro Relicensing Coalition (MHRC) and Rivers Alliance of Wisconsin (RAW) worked on and are parties to WSSA.
