The Niagara Project was specifically authorized by Congress in the Niagara
Redevelopment Act of 1957 and is governed by two treaties ( Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 between the United States and Canada and Niagara River Water Diversion Treaty of 1950) and project-specific legislation.
The existing Niagara Project is located in Niagara County, New York, on the Niagara River, a 35-mile-long waterway that connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and is an international boundary water between the United States and Canada.
The project has two developments: the 2,515.5-MW conventional Robert Moses development and the 240-MW Lewiston pumped storage development.
