Water is Life series with ARA + partners!

Published 5/25/2021  |  Alabama Rivers Alliance

We invite you to join us each Tuesday from noon – 1 pm for the Water is Life Zoom Talk series! We highlight the role that water plays in our lives throughout Alabama and we share how you can participate in the efforts to protect water. You’ll hear from our partners across the state, and leading experts in water protection. We even have a few river and Alabama history lessons thrown in!

As we look around us in the midst of a global pandemic, our slogan, Water is Life, has taken on a whole new meaning, as having plenty of clean water to wash our hands becomes a life-saving ritual.  The Alabama Rivers Alliance and our partners are always thinking about clean water and we know it means many things to many people in Alabama, that’s why we launched our new Water is Life webinar series on Rivers of Alabama Day in 2020!

UPCOMING WATER IS LIFE ZOOM TALKS

Tuesday May 25 – Youth + Climate with Ankur Shah (Sunrise Movement) and Ruby Krasnow (Alabama Environmental Youth Council)

As we continue talking climate in May, we must amplify and learn from the voices of the generations who will inherit the mistakes the older generations have made before them. We will hear from two powerful voices of the youth climate movement here in Alabama. Learn more about the Sunrise Movement and their accomplishments and hear about the new Alabama Environmental Youth Council and how to engage the youth in your current work. We’ll also hear their ideas for how to address the climate issues we are all facing. You won’t want to miss this insightful discussion with the next generation of environmental protectors!

Tuesday, June 1 –  Water is Life: In The Netherlands with James Lowery

The Netherlands is a fascinating country that must deal daily with living below the level of the North Sea. It has dealt with water control and removal since the 1200s and has learned to live with water instead of against it.  At the same time, the country depends on waterways for living, commerce and travel. The Netherlands is a wonderful combination of old and new; past and future; rural and urban. Join us for a general discussion about The Netherlands, including but unique ideas that we in the United States can learn from The Netherlands and how they handle their water.

ABOUT RIVERS OF ALABAMA DAY

Supported by both houses of the legislature, the purpose of this day is to recognize the many valuable assets rivers bring to the State of Alabama. According to the resolution, Alabama’s rivers are a blessing to the state since they provide habitat to high quality freshwater fish, mussel, snail, and crawfish species; supply the water essential to agriculture and industry; and support the state’s multimillion dollar tourism industry.
