Updates to the Alabama Rivers Alliance Team!

We are thrilled to welcome Charles Miller to the ARA team as our Policy Director! Charles will join us full time in January of 2024 as our Policy Director focusing on government affairs and he will be leading our policy advocacy work. A long-standing key volunteer and trusted advisor to our work, Charles brings a deep understanding of Alabama’s environmental and political landscape that aligns with our new strategic plan.

We’re also excited to share that Jack West will be shifting his focus on our growing team.  Jack will be taking on a new and vital role as Director of Special Projects, where he will focus on the intersection of energy and water issues, including his continued successful leadership of our hydropower relicensing work.

All About Charles

Charles is no stranger to making a difference in the world of conservation and environmental protection in Alabama. He was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Alabama Rivers Alliance’s Emerging Leader award in 2018, and his dedication and impact have only grown since. Charles was a founding member of ARA’s Young Professionals group, quickly rising to the Board of Directors. In 2021, he was also recognized nationally with the Emerging Leader award from River Network.

Charles has an impressive background, having clerked or interned with Southern Environmental Law Center, Black Warrior Riverkeeper, American Rivers, and the EPA’s Office of Criminal Enforcement, Forensics, and Training. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama School of Law and a B.A. in political science from UA, as well as a master’s certificate in nonprofit management from UAB.

After serving as the Policy Manager at Missouri Confluence Waterkeeper, Charles is thrilled to return to Alabama with his wife, Robin, and continue his work to #DefendRivers.

Join us in welcoming Charles Miller and congratulating Jack West on their new roles! Read more about the ARA Team by clicking here.
