The project is located on the Des Moines River in the City of Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. The original license for the project, which began generating power in 1931, was issued on April 11, 1930.
The Ottumwa Project consists of an 18-foot-high, that impounds a 500-acre reservoir. The powerhouse contains three generating units with a combined installed capacity of 3.2 MW.
